The Board at Ujima CDC
PRESIDENT - Mr. Cornelius Sadler
President Sadler was asked to guide the CDC by Dr. John Mendez, Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church. As an original member, he brings managerial and financial skills to the CDC. “Sandy” believes that the newsletters, forums, community involvement, word of mouth, and Ujima’s activities will keep the community abreast about our mission.
VICE PRESIDENT - Mr. Hobart Jones
Mr. Jones has provided exemplary leadership that has been visionary and energizing to an assortment of local organizations. He serves as co-chair on CHANGE, Inc. (Communities Making All Neighbors Gain Empowerment, serves on the governing body of Emmanuel Baptist Church, serves as a mentor and Chair of the Carver Alumni Association, and serves as a member of Winston-Salem State University’s “Hoops” Group. Hobart Jones has for decades been an example of these values in Winston-Salem.
SECRETARY - Ms. Carolyn Hardin
Our secretary, Ms. Carolyn Hardin was introduced to Ujima CDC by Tameka White, former Executive Director of Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods in 2007. Her tenure began in 2008. Carolyn has experiences in fund development for nonprofits as well as management and public relations skills. She believes that mass media, Facebook, Twitter, and the Internet are the keys to informing the public. She is excited about providing clean, comfortable and affordable living space.
TREASURER - Ms. Mildred Peppers
Upon completing the Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods 2006 weekend seminar, Mildred and her husband’s (now deceased) interest in nonprofits was ignited. January 2009 was the official date of her acceptance letter to the board. A retired teacher, her skills include strong speaking, writing, and listening skills, as well as organizational skills. A team player, she has a basic understanding of board govenance and accountability. She believes that the City View project will put new life into the area.
ASSISTANT TREASURER - Ms. Barbara Lee
Mrs. Barbara Lee, also a retired teacher, joined the board in the fall of 2009. She actually recruited Emmanuel Baptist Church members to participate in Ujima's activities before joining the board. She is a strong supporter of the mission. Barbara also operates Comfort Tours and Travel, Inc., which sharpens her business skills.
CONSULTANT - Mr. Larry Weston
In 2011, Mr. Larry Weston officially came on board with UJIMA as a consultant. Larry has served as a developer, educator, project developer, manager, trainer and technical writer. His thirty- five (35) years of experience in the nonprofit field adds strength to UJIMA.
